Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Zaka Ashraf, who has set revival of international cricket in the country as his main task, was surprisingly unaware of the positive developments which took place during the Marylebone Cricket Club’s (MCC) Cricket Committee’s recent meeting in South Africa.
The London-based club, which acts as the guardian of the rules of the game, held a two-day meeting in Cape Town earlier this week, where the matter of revival of international cricket in Pakistan also came under discussion.
The committee, much to the delight of Pakistan fans reviewed the improving situation in the country following a report by former Pakistan captain Majid Khan, who is also a member of the committee. The cricket committee also recommended sending a delegation to Pakistan for a security assessment, subject to the government’s advice and the MCC Committee approval.
Ashraf, however, despite commendable efforts to revive international cricket in Pakistan in the short time he has been in office, raised eyebrows after expressing ignorance on the development.
“It’s not in my knowledge,” he said, blaming the hectic schedule in Karachi and Hyderabad, where he has been meeting with regional officials and former cricketers.
‘Whatmore only coming for an interview’
Meanwhile, the chairman played down the impression that former Australian cricketer Dav Whatmore was coming to finalise terms for Pakistan’s coaching job on January 14.
“Whatmore is coming for an interview with the coach-hunt committee,” he said before reiterating that nothing was finalised on coach selection. “The committee is still interviewing candidates. The coach will be announced after the England series.”
Ashraf met with officials of Pakistan disabled and veterans associations, besides those of the Karachi City Cricket Association, who conveyed their issues to him.
