The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has announced plans to support Awami National Party’s (ANP) resolution to strengthen democracy coupled with reposing full confidence and trust in the political leadership of the country.

The decision was taken after a meeting between MQM leaders and Interior Minister Rehman Malik at the Governor House on Sunday.

The meeting, which continued for about two hours, generated a consensus on foiling all conspiracies against the civilian government.  Sindh Governor Ishratul Ebad Khan, MQM Deputy Convenor Farooq Sattar and MNA Haider Abbas Rizvi were also present in the discussion.

The resolution was moved by the ANP chief Asfandyar Wali Khan in the National Assembly, following the Supreme Court (SC) warning government on the NRO issue.

Briefing the media afterwards, Farooq Sattar said that the MQM Rabita Committee, after consulting constitutional experts, has decided to fully support ANP’s resolution.

“We are making our best efforts to promote the democratic culture in the country. Therefore, we will support ANP’s resolution on the matter,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Rehman Malik thanked MQM leaders, especially the party chief Altaf Hussain for supporting the prospective move.

He also expressed optimism that parliament will adopt the resolution today (Monday) expressing full confidence in the political leadership,” he remarked.

The MQM had always supported the federal government and stood by it in times of need, he added.
