Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan on Tuesday denied the presence of Islamic State (IS) militants in Pakistan.

Addressing the media during 18th Rangers Recruitment Parade in Karachi, Khan said that a number of militant bodies were functional in Pakistan but “there is no presence of any group by this name in Pakistan”.

Khan’s statement follows a confidential report sent to law enforcing authorities by Balochistan Government, warning of increased presence of IS in Pakistan adding that it has recruited around 10 to 12,000 followers from tribal areas.

There have also been reports of distribution of pamphlets and display of posters in areas of Lahore, Karachi and Khanewal.

Lahore DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf on Tuesday registered an FIR against unidentified persons for calling for support for the militant group under Section 153.
